While the science behind Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is steadily advancing, identifying measurable biomarkers remains challenging. Unfortunately, ASD continues to be affected by stigmas rooted in misconceptions and unsupported opinions. Despite developments in research, educational outreach, and therapeutic practices within academia, healthcare systems, and governments, much of this crucial information remains siloed, making it difficult for families to access. A widely recognized issue within the autism community is that accessing accurate, reliable information can be a significant challenge.

The Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO), governed by the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, is working to address this challenge. Since 2017 In the UAE, differently-abled individuals are referred to as "People of Determination" to acknowledge their resolve and daily fortitude. The ZHO has positioned itself as a key player in an international movement, focusing on improving autism care in the Middle East and beyond. In fact ZHO has organized the International Conference on Developments in Autism Research "Challenges and Solutions" for the second year in a row in Abu Dhabi. The conference covers a broad set of issues related to Autism and Autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The conference is envisioned not only as an experience-sharing event, but also as an attempt to deal with serious medical and social problems which are not getting its fair share of attention in most countries.

A New Era of Collaboration

The ZHO's commitment to advancing autism care extends beyond the UAE, fostering international collaborations that bridge the East and the West. This approach ensures that the UAE's autism care practices are informed by the latest advancements and best practices from around the world. By partnering with global leaders in autism research and advocacy, the ZHO is creating a network that facilitates the exchange of knowledge, resources, and strategies.

Medical Advancements

A significant achievement of this international collaboration is the launch of the International Journal for Autism Challenges and Solutions. This inaugural edition, released in May 2024, includes research from a global consortium of doctors, clinicians, and experts in the field. All abstracts are translated into Arabic, which helps make research more accessible to Arabic-speaking researchers, practitioners, and families. This effort aims to bridge the language gap and promote collaboration within the international community, ensuring that valuable insights are available to those who need them.

Educational Initiatives

Beyond medical research, the ZHO has launched 16 primary schools exclusively serving children who require or desire additional resources beyond what is offered in traditional public schools. These schools provide a safe learning environment for approx. 1,800 students, offering specialized education and therapy services. Moreover, ZHO is dedicating the efforts to provide comprehensive support services for more than +27,000 PODs such as Assessment and Diagnoses, POD cards , POD car parking permits and psychological and social counseling. Besides, it gives thorough rehabilitation programs relying on cutting edge technologies like in immersive rooms, techno-therapy labs, hydro-therapy pools, and assistive technologies; fostering thrilling experiences towards therapy and progression pathways.

This model is being observed by other countries including Middle East countries like Egypt , Jordan and other Arab Countries and extended to universal countries (ex. USA, UK, China, Russia, Japan, Germany, amongst others), as they develop new programs to support this population.

Vocational Programs

The ZHO extends its care beyond primary education through a vocational program that provides professional job training and employment opportunities. Several companies operate under this program, including a prosthetics lab, a flower shop, Café , a chocolatier catering to corporate clients, a cheesery, and a textile company that originally launched by selling messenger bags for the 2019 Special Olympics in the UAE. These products are branded under "The Bee" logo with a sign of "Made by People of Determination" and are sold both domestically and internationally, demonstrating the value of inclusivity in the job market. Reaching since 2019 up today more than 100+ POD's employed within these industrial workshops.

On Sept. 23 - 25, ZHO is hosting the World Congress on Rehabilitation Work and Employment in Abu Dhabi. Speakers from all over the world (58 Countries participating) are set to present on the benefits of neuro-diverse inclusion in the workforce.

Global Tech Innovation and Commercialization

This program has opened the door to the international community for technological innovation that benefits People of Determination while also creating employment opportunities. The UAE has positioned itself as a leader in technology, and the ZHO is contributing to this effort by providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to access resources for innovation and commercialization. The ZHO has supported technological advancements from entrepreneurs in various countries, for example, Germany, Australia, United States, India, and upcoming Brazil to the list, demonstrating a commitment to broader societal benefits.

Addressing Local Challenges

Access to autism resources remains a challenge for many parents in the MENA region, where healthcare systems can be fragmented and inconsistent. The ZHO is addressing this by creating a centralized hub of resources (https://www.emiratesscholar.com/journals/) that brings international knowledge into the local context. Additionally, the ZHO translates global research into local dialects, reducing barriers to information for families who may struggle with language or accessibility issues. By localizing this knowledge, the ZHO empowers families and caregivers with the tools they need to navigate the complex landscape of autism care.

Opening Doors to Global Opportunities

Through its international collaborations and commitment to localizing global knowledge, the ZHO is enhancing autism care within the UAE and setting an example for how nations can address the needs of individuals with autism. The organization's efforts contribute to a global movement focused on making a positive impact on the lives of People of Determination.

As the ZHO continues to bridge gaps and foster collaboration, its work is not only transforming autism care in the Middle East but also contributing to a broader global dialogue on inclusivity and support for individuals with autism.
